Project Overview
Kilmahon House, a fully restored Georgian country house built in 1780 in the East Cork village of Shanagarry, needed a website to showcase its luxury bed and breakfast offering and attract discerning guests from Ireland and abroad. Listed as a Glebe Heritage House of Ireland, Kilmahon has been lovingly restored over many years to blend original period features with modern comforts — six individually designed en-suite bedrooms, elegant reception rooms, mature grounds, and proximity to some of Cork’s finest attractions including Ballymaloe Cookery School, Ballycotton Bay’s blue flag beaches, and the Jameson Midleton Distillery. Nua Web Design created a refined, atmosphere-rich website that positions Kilmahon House as the definitive luxury country house retreat in East Cork, helping guests discover, imagine, and book their stay with ease.
Design Goals
Heritage & Luxury Positioning: To communicate the rare combination of 18th-century Georgian architecture and lovingly restored modern luxury — conveying that Kilmahon is not simply a B&B but a genuine heritage experience where guests sleep surrounded by antique furnishings, period features, and spectacular countryside views.
Atmosphere Before Information: To lead with emotion and visual beauty rather than facts and bullet points — drawing potential guests into the Kilmahon experience through imagery and language that evokes peace, elegance, and escape from everyday life before presenting practical details.
Guest Confidence Building: To present the full scope of what Kilmahon offers — bedrooms, reception rooms, grounds, breakfast, local attractions, and private event availability — giving prospective guests everything they need to picture themselves there and book with confidence.
Location as an Asset: To frame Shanagarry and East Cork not as remote or obscure but as an enviable base — just 30 minutes from Cork Airport and Cork city, walking distance from Ballymaloe, and close to beaches, cliff walks, lighthouse tours, and world-class golf.
Event & Private Hire Visibility: To communicate that Kilmahon is available for smaller private events on special request, opening a secondary revenue stream beyond B&B stays by appealing to couples and groups seeking an intimate, extraordinary venue.
Renovation Story: To share the ongoing restoration journey of the house as a narrative of care, investment, and passion — turning what could be seen as a “work in progress” into a compelling story of heritage stewardship that adds depth and authenticity to the brand.
The Solution
Nua Web Design delivered an elegant, image-led website that captures the timeless beauty of Kilmahon House while giving guests the practical information they need to book their stay. Key features include:
Cinematic Hero Video: A full-width video of Kilmahon House and its grounds as the first impression on the homepage — immediately transporting visitors into the atmosphere of the property far more powerfully than a static image could achieve.
Heritage Narrative: Rich descriptive copy introducing the house’s 1780 origins, listed Glebe Heritage House status, and the years-long restoration process, giving guests the cultural context that elevates a stay at Kilmahon from accommodation to experience.
“Rejuvenate & Reset” Messaging: Evocative language throughout the site painting the picture of reading by a warm fire, strolling through old gardens, and escaping the stresses of everyday life — speaking directly to the motivations of guests seeking a restorative rural retreat.
Bedroom Showcase: Dedicated bedrooms page presenting six individually designed en-suite rooms combining super-king beds and power showers with antique furniture, sumptuous furnishings, and scenic views — communicating the seamless blend of comfort and heritage that defines the Kilmahon experience.
Reception Rooms Presentation: Dedicated page for the sitting room and reception spaces — important for both B&B guests seeking comfort beyond their bedroom and for prospective private event enquirers visualising the property as a venue.
Grounds Page: Dedicated section for the mature gardens and outdoor spaces, reinforcing the sense of space, serenity, and natural beauty that sets a country house stay apart from hotel accommodation.
Breakfast Feature: Dedicated breakfast page with imagery communicating the quality and care invested in the morning meal — a critical trust signal for B&B guests for whom breakfast is a defining part of the stay experience.
Rates Page: Clear, transparent pricing information giving guests the ability to plan and budget their stay without needing to enquire, reducing friction in the booking consideration process.
Local Attractions Hub: Comprehensive local attractions page featuring twelve nearby experiences — Shanagarry Beach (10-minute walk), Ballymaloe Cookery School, Ballymaloe House, Ballycotton Lighthouse boat tours, Ballycotton Cliff Walk, Jameson Midleton Distillery, Cobh Heritage Centre, Fota House and Wildlife Park, championship golf at Fota Island and Castlemartyr, art classes at Kilkenny Design Centre, Blarney Castle, and Youghal — positioning Kilmahon as the perfect base for exploring the very best of East Cork.
Renovation Story Section: Transparent and engaging documentation of the house’s ongoing restoration, turning the heritage stewardship journey into a compelling brand story that builds admiration and connection with guests who appreciate authenticity.
Private Events Availability: Subtle but clear communication that Kilmahon is available for smaller events on special request — opening enquiry opportunities for intimate gatherings, celebrations, and exclusive-use bookings without overshadowing the B&B identity.
Photo Gallery: Dedicated photography section providing a rich visual library of the property — interiors, exteriors, grounds, and surrounding landscape — giving guests the visual confidence to book without an in-person visit.
Location Context: Consistent emphasis on Kilmahon’s position just 30 minutes from Cork Airport and Cork city, making it highly accessible for both international arrivals and domestic short breaks despite its secluded rural setting.
Elegant Typography & Colour Palette: Design language that reflects the Georgian heritage of the house — refined, unhurried, and quietly luxurious, reinforcing the premium positioning through every visual detail.
Mobile Responsive Design: Fully responsive layout ensuring the beauty of Kilmahon House translates equally well on mobile devices, where a significant proportion of travel research and booking consideration takes place.
